Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) is gaining importance after the publication of several articles with evidence in increased brain activity by SPECT imaging along with motor and cognitive improvements. The effects were evident even in chronic victims up to many years after Stroke. As on now, we don’t have much to offer many Stroke patients when they attain a plateau in recovery. The oxygen supply to under-active neurons is low due to damage to blood vessels in Stroke. Poor blood supply leads to oxygen deficiency, anaerobic metabolism and ATP depletion. The decreased oxygen level not only causes reduction in the neuronal activity but also prevents angiogenesis to replace the stroke-damaged blood vessels and the generation of new synaptic connections. Improving Oxygenation of the brain helps to recover some of the damaged neurons thereby improve motor and cognitive functions.

The technique is to provide 90% to 95% oxygen at 2-3 times more than atmospheric pressure in a safe environment. In India, very few HBOT machines are available. Some look like mobile mortuaries. Some have large chambers where normal air containing only 17% Oxygen is compressed and Pure Oxygen given through mask. These are very expensive.

We have made a unique HBOT chamber where three people can comfortably sit without fear. It is not expensive.

It is useful in the following conditions

  • Post Stroke patients even after many years
  • Brain injured patients
  • Sudden blindness and deafness
  • Autism and Cerebral Palsy
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Non-Healing Ulcers and Gangrene
